Dinfo Geographical Guide

back to main help

Dinfo Directory listings are ordered geographically. The location menu will only display choices that contain relevant listings to reduce the possibility of a dead-end search result. Your search history is displayed above the location and category menu, you may return to any previous stages of your search by using the red links as they appear in your history. When there are no more options to choose from, the location or category menu will disappear, however your search stage history will remain visible.

We have implemented some rules to our database’s geographical ordering to make the directory work more efficiently.

We wanted to give users the option to refine their geographical search in stages from national, to regional then to county and town. Firstly we split the United Kingdom into 14 regions

However defining the counties within these regions was not as simple as it sounds. There are so many conflicting opinions on what is or isn’t a county, should we include unitary authorities? Perhaps we should use the old county names, or the new ones, some counties in the UK are known locally by as many as three different names, and who are we to decide which is the correct one? So we decided to do away with “counties” and for the purposes of searching our directory, Dinfo Regions are split into “Areas” In most locations the area will correspond with the popular county name, there are exceptions but wherever possible we have tried to use locally recognized area names.

We do not impose this rule on any of our advertisers, they may list their address in any way they choose, however each and every directory listing has a region and area field separate from their address that are utilized by the Dinfo location search.

Companies listed in a geographical area may not necessarily reside there, however they do supply their products and services to customers within these locations. The Dinfo database will only display geographical locations that are populated with directory listings, if you can’t find what you need in your local town, check out suppliers in your local area or region.

Why is my county or town not listed in the location menu?
It may be that there are no companies listed in that category for your town, or possible we have named your local “area” to something other than your familiar county name.

We have included an alphabetical list of UK counties and their corresponding Dinfo areas and regions to help you – we have tried to include as many different versions of county names as possible but wouldn’t dream of assuming we have discovered every single one!
